Make an Iceberg

Buoyancy

    Things You Will Need
    • Balloon
    • Plastic bag
    • A freezer
    • Scissors
    • Deep bucket or large bowl
    • Water
    • Salt

    Do This

    1. Fit the balloon over the nozzle of the cold-water faucet and fill it with water.
    2. Tie the end of the balloon to seal the water inside.
    3. Put the balloon inside a plastic bag (without holes) and place in a freezer overnight.
    4. Next morning, take the balloon out of the freezer. Use the scissors to cut away the balloon carefully.
    5. Fill the deep bucket or large bowl 3/4 full with water.
    6. Add about 5-10 tablespoons of salt to the water.
    7. Put your iceberg in the deep bucket or bowl of saltwater.

    What Should Have Happened

Your iceberg should have floated, but only a small portion of the whole iceberg should have remained at the surface. Only about a tenth of a real iceberg shows above the surface of water. Your iceberg should have been similar. This makes icebergs very dangerous to ships.
